Kuka on Kunda? Mitä tarkoittaa HWUDB? Mikä on alta? Vastaukset selviävät Oxford University Pressin julkaisemasta hakuteoskokoelmasta Oxford Reference Online Premium. Premium-kokoelma sisältää yli 200 sanakirjaa ja muita hakuteoksia lukuisilta tieteenaloilta (eri painokset mukaan lukien nimekkeitä on lähes 300). Kirjasto on vastikään hankkinut kokoelman yliopiston käyttöön. Premium-kokoelma on viety Nelli-portaaliin nimellä Oxford Reference Online Premium Collection. Nimekkeittäin kokoelman julkaisut löytyvät myös Josku-tietokannasta sekä UEF-Finna-hakupalvelusta.

Who is Kunda? What does HWUDB mean? What is alta? Answers could be checked from the reference work collection called Oxford Reference Online Premium. The Premium Collection offers a huge range of fully-indexed, extensively linked, up to date, and cross-searchable dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press, including detailed information across a broad subject range from titles in the world-renowned Oxford Companions series. The size of the collection is more than 200 titles (almost 300 when counting all editions). Oxford Reference Online Premium Collection can be found on Nelli portal of the University of Eastern Finland Library. All titles with full text links can be found on Josku database as well on UEF-Finna search service.

If you have downloaded newspapers or magazines to your own device on the university network, you can read them later offline as long as you like. Beside offline reading of downloaded material there is a true anywhere-anytime access called Radiant Access. If you open PressReader app on the university Wi-Fi, the Radiant Access provides you the access to whole PressReader content for 72 hours via your own Internet connection.
HotSpot Map tells you all places in the world PressReader is available. On HotSpots you can use PressReader with your own device via PressReader app, if you are allowed log in the local Wi-Fi as a guest. With a web browser you can anytime and anywhere log into PressReader via Nelli portal of the University of Eastern Finland (please, log in to the remote access first).

Maanantaina 11. tammikuuta KYSin tieteellisen kirjaston uudet mustavalkoiset kirjahyllyt vihdoinkin saapuivat. Vaikka suurin osa aineistoista onkin jo sähköisiä, tarvitaan myös hyllyjä edelleen.
Vielä riittää tekemistä loppuviikoksi, että kirjasto saadaan valmiiksi asiakkaita varten ennen ensi maanantaita. Kirjat ja lehdet on hyllytettävä, sähkö- ja IT-ihmisillekin on töitä, mutta alkaa tämä jo kirjastolta näyttää.
On Monday 11th January the new black-and-white book shelves of KUH medical library finally arrived. Though most of the library material is in electronic format, also shelves are still important.
The library is eventually starting to look like a library, instead of a storeroom of blue plastic boxes. There is still plenty of work — like shelving, electrical and ICT installations — to be done this week, so that we will be ready to open for customers next Monday.

Totta! Ei ihan omina mutta käytössämme kuitenkin. Kirjasto on sopinut tiedekustantaja Elsevierin kanssa sopimuksen, jonka mukaan olemme saaneet käyttöoikeudet vuoden ajaksi yli 13 000 Elseverin kustantamaan e-kirjaan. E-kirjojen ostoarvo olisi yli 1,5 milj. euroa. Sopimus on eräänlainen vuokraussopimus, jossa vuoden kuluttua lunastamme omiksi vuoden aikana eniten käytetyt e-kirjat vuokra-ajan alussa maksetulla vuokrasummalla. Tämän hankintamallin avulla saamme tarjolle suuren määrän tiedekirjoja, mutta hankimme pysyvästi käyttöön vain ne, jotka osoittautuvat olevan meille tarpeen. Kirjat on saatu käyttöön vuoden 2015 lopulla, ja hankintasatsauksella on pyritty ennakoivasti tasoittamaan kirjojen hankintatarvetta kiristyvien määrärahojen tilanteessa.
Kirjojen ajallinen ilmestymiskate alkaa 1940-luvulta ja ulottuu vuoteen 2015 asti. Tarjolla on e-kirjoja monilta tieteenaloilta. E-kirjojen tiedot ja linkit itse kirjoihin on lisätty Josku-tietokantaan sekä hakupalvelu Finnaan. Lisäksi ne löytyvät Nelli-portaalin kautta Elsevier Books on ScienceDirect -palvelusta, missä kirjoja mahdollista etsiä myös selaamalla eri aihealueita hierarkkisesti. Library has made a contract with a scientific publisher Elsevier for over 13,000 eBooks. The value of the set is more than 1,5 million euros. The contract is one kind of a rental contract, which allows us to use and read rented Elsevier eBooks for a year. After a year we can redeem the most used titles to our own permanent eBook collection for a rental sum paid. With this system can be ensured, that every eBook will be purchased for a need; not just in case.
The time span of eBooks is from 1940’s to the year 2015, and titles represent many disciplines. All titles with full text links can be found on Josku database as well on Finna search service . The service Elsevier Books on ScienceDirect can be found on Nelli portal of the University of Eastern Finland Library, too. On the service interface you can also browse the eBooks hierarchically by subject categories. Straight links to the browsable subject categories are:

Nyt ei mene kirjastossa niin kuin Strömsössä. Arvio uuden tilan uusien kirjahyllyjen saapumis- ja asennusaikataulusta osoittautui tänään ylioptimistiseksi. Alkuperäisen aikataulun mukaan meidän piti tällä viikolla jo hyllyttää kirjoja ja lehtiä paikoilleen, mutta hyllymme seilaavatkin vielä maailman merillä.
Koska kirjasto on edelleen tupaten täynnä neljän muuttolaatikon torneja, on tilassa ahdasta eikä aineisto ole saatavilla. Avauspäivä siirtyy viikolla ja on nykyisen tiedon mukaan maanantai 18.1.2016. Olemme pahoillamme, mutta toivomme, että hyvää kannattaa odottaa.
Things do not always turn out as planned. Today we learned that the estimated time of the arrival and mounting of the new shelves of the new library was too optimistic. We were supposed to be shelving the books and periodicals this week, but the shelves are still sailing.
The library is full of removal box turrets and therefore cramped, with no access to the books and journals. We have to postpone the opening day by one week so that, according to current information, we will open on Monday 18th January, 2016. We are sorry and we hope the new library is worth waiting.

KYSin tieteellinen kirjasto/KUH medical library
KYSin tieteellisen kirjaston muutto on jo lähellä puoliväliä. On aika pitää joulutauko.
Vanhassa kirjastossa on viiden naisen voimin urakoitu kokoelmat, koneet ja paljon kaikkea muuta muuttolaatikoihin. Uudessa kirjastossa ahkeroivat kalusteiden asentajat. Ensi viikolla muuttofirma vie muuttolaatikot uuteen kirjastoon. Seuraavalla kirjastohenkilökunta hyllyttää kokoelmat, Istekki , TiPa ja MikroVäylä asentavat koneet ja laitteet. Laitteita ja toimintoja testataan, jotta uusi kirjasto olisi mahdollisimman toimiva heti 11.1.2016.
Kirjastolaiset lähtevät pian joulun viettoon, mutta odottavat innolla pääsyä uuteen työympäristöön ja vastaanottamaan asiakkaita nykyaikaiseen oppimisympäristöön.

PubMed-tietokantaan tallennettiin 16.6.2015 kahdeskymmenesviidesmiljoonas viite. Haku yhdellä tai kahdella hakusanalla tuottaa valtavasta tietokannasta niin suuren määrän viitteitä, että täsmälliseen tiedontarpeeseen sopivan löytäminen vie paljon aikaa. Miten hakutulosta saisi toisaalta osuvammaksi mutta myös kattavammaksi?
